RoomSpec

Teams Rooms and Zoom Rooms network calculator

Enter how many rooms you have and what’s in them. You’ll get the internet bandwidth to plan for, the firewall ports to open and the PoE budget per room.

Platform

Busy offices often see half to two thirds of rooms in calls at peak.

PoE devices in each room

Budgets use what a switch reserves for each PoE class.

How the figures are worked out

Bandwidth uses each platform’s published planning guidance per room, multiplied by the number of rooms you expect to be in calls at the same time. Microsoft suggests planning 10 Mbps in each direction per Teams Room, although rooms typically use 3 to 4 Mbps. Zoom publishes figures for 1080p video; rooms with two screens and content sharing use more.

The PoE budget adds up what a switch reserves for each device’s PoE class, plus 20% headroom.

Questions

How much bandwidth does a Teams Room need?

Microsoft recommends planning for 10 Mbps up and down per room. In practice a room typically uses 3 to 4 Mbps and adjusts to what’s available.

Which ports does Zoom Rooms need?

Outbound TCP 80, 443, 8801 and 8802, and UDP 3478, 3479 and 8801 to 8810. Check Zoom’s current list before go-live.

How do I size a PoE switch for a meeting room?

Add the reserved power for each device’s PoE class, allow about 20% headroom, and choose a switch whose total PoE budget covers it.
